I saw it more as a brief blip, where he's inspired to do the bare minimum that you'd expect from a decent person, but as soon as that fails, he's off to commit murder.

From what I remeber their descision on what they were planning on doing at the end was portrayed ambiguously. Also how was Frances McDormond's character a probable racist?

It was more "You can a detective if you stop worrying that intellect and sensitivity are 'gay.'" I felt like MM was on to something in so clearly diagnosing toxic masculinity as one of the problems standing in the way of basic competence.
