Except, whether or not Scorsese realized this, the effect of the film was to amplify Belfort's image and give him new venues to shill his garbage. Scorsese identified the dynamic, and then he just participated in it.

I don't think the film changes anyone's mind about Belfort. But it gives him a much wider platform which he then leveraged into expanding his scam.

But if the threshold is “gives him oxygen” doesn’t that mean anything that references him is complicit?

I HATED that they gave Belfort a cameo at the end. If it was a contractual thing, they should have had him cameo as one of his victims.

I guess I’ll have to look up your Scorsese piece you mentioned, though personally I’m of the opposite opinion. With Casino/Goodfellas/WoWS, come the end, I never felt like the characters faced a real loss that would in turn paint the criticism more clearly.

Though both films have validity in the arguments that their indicting of these lifestyles/philosophies have been misconstrued with a lot of really macho guys believing Fight Club supports them, but I’ve also seen people admire Belfort after WoWS.

1/ Wish I hadn't missed this discussion. WoWS is no different than almost every other Scorsese film. Belfort is Hill is Da Motta is Rothstein. They are the story of how America was and continues to be built. All are spellbinding, disturbing, destructive...

2/ ...and if we're honest witg ourselves there's something that our dark selves admire about their ability to make their world in their own image. They have decided to be the tigers in their own jungles. That they're all terrible people is not lost on Scorsese; that is the point.
