Folks... folks... folks... like.... what if... Ready Player One is good?

I don’t quite think the film is an evisceration of the book. The book is definitely pro-military but I wouldn’t say pro-fascist. It’s more CoD than Triumph of the Will. And Verhoeven never actually read the book, so not sure how he could respond to it. Still a masterpiece.

I don't know if I'd say eviscerated, the guts were still there. Maybe it was flayed, since everything was reframed.

How could it eviscerate the book, when the guy who directed the movie never even read the book?

By standing in stark moral opposition to its values.

Now I really want to do an adaptation of RPO where the theme is "Permanent nostalgia will ruin your life, real heroes move forward," but do it in such a way that no one gets it and the movie does poorly and it becomes a cult classic.
