Thank you for writing this. My best friend’s ex was emotionally abusive and his personality was exactly like Reynolds’. When the audience laughed at his exaggerated behavior, I cringed because i saw it happen in real life. My best friend cried when she saw it. It’s a horror film.

Not AT ALL. As I watched it I kept on thinking about her ex the entire time, and she cried during it because he was so much like her ex. You’re not alone in this. Reynolds is an abuser and Alma’s fighting back/staying doesn’t change that fact

I totally get that. I wouldn’t say PT is empowering to abuse survivors, but it’s also not disempowering+reveals ugly truths. It shows that Reynolds is a child who can’t function without his sister and the support of women. Although Alma is Stockholm Syndrome-y to me, that’s real!

Vicky Krieps is so phenomenal (WHERE THE HELL ARE HER AWARDS) that although Alma “fights back” we can see her as more nuanced than as being just some feminist hero for doing so. She’s doing it for him as well as for her, to stay submissive and be dominant, it’s so complex.

The thing to note about those laughs, is that Reynolds is indeed being ridiculous "do you have a gun!??!?" but it's the ridiculousness of someone who will take the slightest unwanted kind gesture to mean attack.

And the fear of greater retribution...
