What do you mean? The fact is it doesn't and instead uses that language to speak about midwesterners are targeted.

Where are you getting midwesterners? It looks like the characters are from Cali or Nevada and the “bubbles” are all spread out. And though the episode should stand alone, the source material is about manufactured paranoia & control and that’s what it’s going after-not race.

They outright say there's the safe zones are the two coasts and on the map the bubbles are in the midwest. And I know what it's going for. I'm saying what it says accidentally and overtly by positioning the fresh-faced white kid as the oppressed "terrorist"

That's the whole problem, it's outright using race to justify that reflexive crap and it's using it in a really problematic way.

Not race at all. As Tierney says at the beginning, the people who live in the bubbles are choosing to live free from surveillance. A lifestyle and ideology, not a race.

it is the cinematic equivalent of going up to an oppressed muslim in this country and saying "i have it just as bad because elitist coast people are mean to me." which is exactly what some members of middle america do when saying reverse racism is a bigger problem that racism.

Ok, I see. Seriously not the intention, as you’re certainly making a point that was not considered in making it. (And again, they’re not meant to be from the midwest, in fact the episode takes place in the midwest. But that’s all messy technical stuff that obv wasn’t made clear.)

I work on a lot of “problematic” shows and I don’t speak up enough when I find things incredibly not ok. Even when it’s personally hurtful to me and my heritage. I feel so much guilt from that. This one just doesn’t (rather, didn’t) seem akin to those to me.

But the episode takes place on the coast. They make this explicit, sorry I'm not trying to be obstinate here, but I'm not reacting to nothing. It's infowars-esque oppression fantasy.

Meaning the problem is not "here's us showcasing others in a racist way." The problem is the episode is putting white people in that place and usurping / erasing that plight, for all the reason i talked about in the review.

Meaning yes, it's a meta-criticism, but a hugely important one.

I did say “Ok, I see.” Your point was made well and I do get it. Was merely clarifying that it was not intended, and sure that might be due to ignorance. (& set just east of the west/east border of that future America. Maybe that wasn’t made clear but that’s what’s in the script)
