Caveat: it is incredibly valid to knock Temple off for its regressive nature. My argument for it is pure cinematic momentum / dramatic tactics. I realize that's an "other than that mrs. lincoln, how was the play?" situation, but that's the argument.

Caveat #2: I absolutely think you can have 5/5 masterpieces with moments that are wonky. We're too hung up on defining masterpieces as "flawless." I know plenty of relatively boring flawless movies that fail to inspire. Instead, give me a bevy of highs any day of the week.

I've always found a 5/5, 10/10, four stars etc. to mean "___ critic's highest recommendation" moreso than "this thing is perfect and free from the sins of humanity".

My favorite quote ever is Daltry on The Who performing TOMMY vs the Broadway production: “Give me a bum note and a bead of sweat anytime.”

Man, tho, the sentiment is good but at the same time the Bway Tommy is the only one I've been able to sit through the whole way...

The problem is people see 10/10 in video games or 5/5 in films, and think that the rating means "perfect" as opposed to "deserves the highest rating possible".

Thank you, I'd actually been struggling with this idea for a while now. There are no flawless movies but there are so many 5/5 masterpieces.
