Writing rant: To each their own, but I genuinely don't understand how people can write in coffee shops.

I think the single most important thing about writing is the ability to zoom in and focus to the point that that all that literally exists in the world is just your sequence of thought.

It's not just how you work out the complex ideas themselves, but it's how you are able to be productive and keep punching through the idea in its entirety.

If literally anything interrupts me while I'm in the middle of deep zooming? It is the greatest affront in the world. It's literally like I was working on set and then someone suddenly grabbed me and puled me three states over. It makes writing impossible.

To be blunt, most of the best writers I knew have a quiet, interruption free space. I literally put my phone in the other room. I never have any notifications on all my shit. No nothing. Just quiet so I can fall into a deep zoom space.

And when it's not catching or I get stuck? That's okay cause it's when *I* need to get away from it, I can can do that. I can check my phone, I can go fuck about on twitter. But Im the one who controls it.

So: Coffee shops are like walking into the den of non-stop interruption. I can think of nothing more harmful. But as a friend once joked, "People need to be in public otherwise they'd just masturbate all day." Which is funny, but ultimately irrelevant.

Again, to each their own. But I just genuinely recommend that writers work at the discipline of being comfortable in the quiet space thing. You may be shocked at the productivity that comes from it?

Last add: This wasn't something natural to me. It was advised to me by someone else. I had to work at it over time, but now I couldn't imagine anything else. (it's also cheaper).

I used to find it horrible, and I've come around. Everything AROUND you is distracting, but it's a different kind of distraction. Being at home means I have habits, chores, worries, and all of them come a'knockin'.

A lot of it is limiting yourself, physically, to what you can do. Or time, perhaps, or outright discomfort. When I'm bathed and clothed and perhaps makeupped in a hotel lobby, I feel different than when I am at my home computer with all the comforts.

Conversely - people could work on the discipline of being unaffected by their surroundings? Not saying that to be combative. I just find that I go into the zone anywhere. Just lose track of everything around me. Doesn't matter what.

I blame six years of desperate journalism (writing 8000-12000 words a week and earning nothing). Had to write anywhere/anytime. Had to sleep anywhere/anytime.

I can’t work in dead quiet - background noise cuts through the tinnitus, which is otherwise distracting. :/

It depends. People with certain types of ADD can focus *better* if there’s a low level of ‘background’ activity. Maybe it keeps any individual stimulus from rising to the level of a distraction. Maybe it’s related to the reason Rx stimulants help. But I’ve seen it work.

for me, the coffee shop is way more quiet than my house...a lot of the time, physically leaving the distractions of the home, people who want my attention, coffee shops and libraries are the only way to go.
