While I disagree with all of the things that the writer of that article champions, even if I were to agree with Rian's decisions I'd say he chose the worst most corny way to execute all of them. Combine those missteps with the lame humor and the interminable length and you get 💩

What can I say, I enjoyed what it did & what it sets up for future legacy-franchises. I don't have any major problems with Rian's choices. I'm curious to see how this film is viewed in 10 years.

Oh I'm just someone whose always deeply interested in how people react to movies and why. It's my job, really. And the word corny has always been this interesting and divisive word in fandom, and I think it largely deals with how people think about tone.

On one side of things, there's fans who think movies have to maintain a strong baseline seriousness to be considered serious. It's often why some fans are so enraptured with Nolan. The perception being he elevates the things we love to being IMPORTANT.

But on the flipside of that, is fans who don't mind full-on comedy or even absurdity, and definitely don't see them as barriers to the moments of well-earned drama and sadness. Bouncing around tones is fine if you're in control. And i think raimi's a master.

And yet he's the filmmaker who gets accused of being corny the most. So it's really this larger matter of what a given audience member "permits" and I think about it all the time. Because in the end, I really only care what a filmmaker is saying thematically.

Okay so I think bouncing around tones is fine and works well in things like animes and certain stories where the situation is serious but the protagonist is light hearted like basically every Will Smith movie. I just didn't think we were going to get goofy Luke Skywalker.
