This is what I find to be everything wrong with modern movie-watching.
Literally up at 330 am still thinking about TLJ. Not sure what I feel except it didn't feel like Star Wars & unsure if that's good or bad.
Well I know what I thoughthttps://filmcrithulk.blog/2017/12/15/the-force-belongs-to-us-the-last-jedis-beautiful-refocusing-of-star-wars/ …
And you wrote a good piece. I think the disconnect for me (and prob many other) is I don't want my icons to change. I want Like to be ROTJ Luke but with grey hair. I don't want to see my heroes deconstructed grimdark style.
that's part of the point in TLJ: you can't expect people to stay the same forever. That's stagnation
But we want our heroes stagnant. Look at the rage over the DCEU. SW is comfort food. You don't want it to change. You want escapism and comfort in a shitty 2017.
That's probably why Johnson did what he did. I love that this isn't comfortable
I don't think people see Star Wars for discomfort, but that probably says more about those of us okd enough to have seen ANH in the theatre. SW is our mythology. Our Arthurian legends
I have bad news for you on how the arthurian books end.
There's a grave difference between mild discomfort and obligatory indulgence. If you want indulgence. It's the death of story.
I'm mildly discomforted. It's much more to process than I expected, but the themes were clear and we'll done, beautifully shot, well acted. My issues are more about what TFA set up & TLJ tossed aside (which is on JJ, not Rian).
