Agree — the plot is exceptionally simple, but I don’t think it fails. Agree re: the film as some litmus test of how they read films or prioritize elements and structure.

This whole thing is making me wonder if there are more subtle levels to the phrase "suspension of disbelief" than I usually give credit, and if something like that (or the hard to define way in which a movie "works" for you in an initial way) is operative here
