This has been a fucking fascinating few days of reactions. I've had lots of people be like "but the film fails on the very things you usually criticize!" and I'm like "what." Every time it's like I have to break out a pad and pen and explain the basics of setups/payoffs/arcs

Yuuuuuup. It’s like arguing with Trump voters. “This doesn’t happen.” “Yes, it does. In this scene here.” “Nope.” “He literally says it.” “Well, that means it’s too on the nose.” “So it’s both on the nose and not there?” “Yes.”

I honestly love that it’s so divisive.

But it's not a divisive movie. It's just not indulgent.

The choices it makes are proving divisive. I think those choices are good and necessary. But about half the people I know who’ve seen it really disliked it.

Well it has an A Cinemascore and exit polls are super strong, social media (and yes, reddit) I think is giving this impression that there's this major divide (and the RT audience rating is like an IMDB rating). But yes, there are still many folks who are angered, it'll pass ^^

There isn't really. In reading the responses it's like 75-25. But the 25% is maaaaaaaaaaddddd.

The people who say the film isn't 'true' to Star Wars or Luke Skywalker's character especially are, in my opinion, REALLY reacting to it in a ridiculously hyperbolic manner and reading the whole thing very superficially.

Oh yes, just because of canon and certain things that haven't been done before. Rian articulates how he came to figuring out how to write Luke, and it just makes sense. I would be curious to see what JJ had in mind right after that ending but since he loved Rian's script ^^

Yep, it's fantastic to read some of the tidbits about the Q&A RJ did with EW, he was clearly nervous about several things but went where his heart told him to go and with what the characters seemed to demand. If you gave those angry fans what they wanted, it'd be a rip off of ESB

I wonder how much of it is due to the JJ mystery box shit being so unevenly distributed into one of the film’s parallel plot lines, and then eventually thrown out the window in favour of actual, strong character work. Frustrating for a certain type of viewer.

My experience is almost all of it is this. People wanted revelations and the film subverted their expectations instead of pandering

The 75% that do like it like it like they read a thought provoking novel. They're going to be quieter about it while the negative opinions are louder.
