This has been a fucking fascinating few days of reactions. I've had lots of people be like "but the film fails on the very things you usually criticize!" and I'm like "what." Every time it's like I have to break out a pad and pen and explain the basics of setups/payoffs/arcs

And every single person demands i explain the entire movie JUST FOR THEM. Guys, it's all in there. Do the work. Think it out. You can do it.

Oh and good granola do I not think I'm the only person who gets character arcs / etc. I'm not trying to be flippant. I'm saying there's just a lot of people asking questions the movie already has very clear answers to. That's the frustration.

Meh, for what it's worth, -I- had fun watching it, and it was what I wanted: an entertaining space fantasy adventure.

I have friends asking me to write up why it worked and it just feels like I am... summarizing the movie

"Do the work. Think it out." is the problem with American audiences. Instead of understanding a character's perspective or the construction of a film, they would rather blankly criticize

I don't believe that's exclusive to American audiences. I've seen similar reactions from British, Irish, Japanese, South Korean and Malaysian audiences to various films over years.

I avoided all discussion about the film till today I'm stunned by the people who didn't like/understand the film.

Reminds me of when Harlan Ellison on 2001. Such a great essay!

You have a very good way of explaining things we already knew but forgot to notice the first time it happened. Your TFA column was like “now I understand why I liked the film why watching it, but it fell flat the next day”
