Of course. Why else would one of the most anticipated films of all time do only ⅔ the gross of the original?

And someone posted that wayback machine post about Return as well. It's almost as if this fanbase has a lot of spicy idiots.

I can't imagine anyone ever hating Empire when it came out. (I wasn't born then)

Remember, that movie ends with a decisive villain victory. My Dad mentioned outright riots in the street because of that. People had never HAD something like that before.

I think it’s definitely compounded by fans getting all worked up over TFA’s mystery box nonsense, only to have TLJ (quite literally) say “Yeah, none of that matters.”
-
I agree with you that that is part of why people are upset. As someone who adores TFA and it’s mystery box I have to say I’m unbothered by what TLJ did. I don’t think it’s saying TFA doesn’t matter. The mystery, like most mysteries, had the simplest solutions.

“Yoda was so weird and annoying” “Why do Luke and Vader have to be related” “Cloud City was pointless”

Super late to this party, but how about the whole wampa arc in Empire, that was super relevant to the rest of the movie. Totally not just a waste of time to justify the scar Mark Hammil got in an accident.

"That twist came out of nowhere! No foreshadowing!"

We forgot how it made considerable less money than Star Wars. The fans today would go insane waiting 3 years for a resolution.
