Am I missing something? Am I the ONLY person that saw this thing tonight and DIDN'T like it??

My advice to anyone who didn’t like it is to give it a second chance/watch. I walked out loving some moments but overall not liking it. Then I watched it again without expectations, knowing how it would play out and found it much, much better. Even great.

TFA is a movie that is great about imbuing the moment with energy and gusto, but it falls away from your hand when you realize it doesn't add up to anything. TLJ does the steady, often thankless work and means something deeply. Not giving what we wanted, but needed.

Your last sentence is exactly the sentiment I came away with. In some ways Johnson showed me what I wanted, showed me why it isn’t Star Wars, then gave me what I needed and reminded me why it is. This is the Star Wars film we and Star Wars need.

TLJ is, like you say, a film so steady and consistent that it can take a second to realise how impossibly difficult that is.

Sure. And then it cuts to a moment of horrible slapstick comedy which is totally out of place. And then jumps to another tonally inconsistent thing. Etc.

Oh dear, not a movie having fun! Sorry i dont mean to be flippant, but movies are allowed to jump tones, I hate that this overtly-serious tonal posturing idea has become the norm. Movies deserve better.
