Why did movies and game publishers decide the only path is a handful of really expensive and hopefully super popular products a year is better than a larger number of modestly budgeted titles?

Same reason every big studio is throwing hundred of million into fire in order to appease movie gods to have their own billion dollar cinematic universe. "They did it why can't we? and Why make millions when you can make billions" Instead of investing in modestly budgeted new IP.

SIMPLY PUT. LAST YEAR 10% OF THE MOVIES (SEQUELS, ETC) DID 60% OF THE BUSINESS. THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE GO SEE. THAT'S WHAT GAMERS BUY.

That's unimaginably depresing expecialy for games that is younger medium to also be reduce to all or nothing business model. That's unsustainable! How long do you take this business model will last before the bottom fall out of the market?

UNSUSTAINABLE FOR WHO? FOR THE COMPANIES IN FEAST OR FAMINE? OR THE INDIE DEVELOPERS WHO HAVE TO GET BY ON LITTLE RESOURCES AND FACE THE SAME FEAST OR FAMINE RESULTS? THE ANSWER IS BOTH. BUT BOTH COME DOWN TO CONSUMER HABITS.

GAMERS BUY WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS PLAYING. AS LONG AS THAT IS TRUE, MOST AAA GAMES WILL FAIL. MOST INDIE GAMES WILL FAIL. AND THE ONES THAT SUCCEED WILL DO INCREDIBLE.
