New Yorkers are actually very nice and genuine. But not in a "people just start talking to you" way. That's the part I have to adjust to.

In New York, unspoken agreement is no one talks to anyone unless you're standing on someone's foot or they have really interesting shoes on.

I think it kind of depends on what you think is polite. My biggest problem in Atlanta was that I thought everybody was being sarcastic.
