I mean, at the most basic level: this movie is FIVE YEARS OLD. It gets talked about A LOT. How am I only realizing this disconnect exists?

If the old man is German, then he's speaking from bitter experience. He's seen his people succumb to violence and won't put up with it again

If he's Jewish, then it's a glib "standing up to oppression" message. Which has iffy connotation when applied to Jews and the Holocaust.
