Look, there's the rare case it works, but it's really really really really hard so most of the time my advice is "just make a real character wants and needs and stuff"https://twitter.com/FallenKnight243/status/1396045139798368262 …

How do you make amnesiac main characters work?

Do you think the trope works better in video games? Since there a lot of the wants and needs are automatically filled in by the player...wanting to experience more of the game.

It absolutely can work better, what with the silent protagonist you can live variously through - but I wish more games would learn Nathan Drake lessons. In that it's even BETTER to live vicariously through an actual good / fun character.

Yeah. The complete blank slate character is a big part of why I dropped elder scrolls.

Yeah, I completely agree. Silent protags feel like boring cardboard standees who much more interesting characters talk at.

Absolutely hate both tropes. One of my favourite examples is BOTW. They built this whole backstory fun of interesting characters but because link is still a brick, every cutscene he is in is worse for his presence. It's painfully grating

Another good example against silent protagonists is Breath Of Fire 4. The thematic core of the game, the climax it builds towards from the start COMPLETELY falls apart in large part because Ryu is not a character, he's a magical brick Nina keeps carrying around
