New Essay! MORTAL KOMBAT (2021) ended up being a really good excuse to talk about the potential pitfalls of prequel-itis and how to best capture the fun of the series... Enjoy!https://www.patreon.com/posts/50555770

Watching this and Sonic the Hedgehog within 12 hrs of one another definitely put the idea of prequel-itis to the front of my mind

This is exactly how I felt watching this (though I did enjoy Kano just being over the top)

100%. Altho the kick spam joke was genuinely good. What kills me is that this movie /should've/ been about Hanzo with the emotional hook of the opening, but the movie thought it was about Cole, yet it was kind of about Kano? Like that's some whiplash.

One sentiment I hear echoed is that the latest trilogy of games (MK 9, 10, and 11) is a better story. Makes me curious to pick them up!

Good piece, although I absolutely refuse to believe the original script of the film didn’t spell it ‘Arkana’

Holy hell yes seeking catharsis in the existence of the material in and of itself yes yes that's it that's what bugs me about these so often

I haven’t watched this yet. But I still Want to respond to a couple things in your write up; on Mortal Kombat Annihilation, it feels like a demo reel for stunt performers and martial artists. On Shang Tsung - you can’t top an actor like Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

I agree 100%. It felt boring and uninspired. Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada were the only things I REALLY enjoyed. Everything else came off as a generic Hollywood martial arts film, poorly staged and edited. Other than Taslim & Sanada’s.
