Let’s say I grant that everything has literary value, wouldn’t you acknowledge that some works have more value than others?

How would you measure that? The only non biased way to do that is influence and with that, the Bible and superman comics win, so how would you measure that? It’s not a science, and that’s the good thing About art. It doesn’t have to be

It’s not a science, but that doesn’t mean we can’t judge its merit. We may quibble over whether Dickens or Austen is the better novelist; there’s no consensus. Occasionally, there is consensus: Shakespeare is superior to Thomas Dekker.

I had a similar discussion with
@carlrosin the other day. He wrote a great post about the subjective vs the objective and that wide space between of the normative. Definitely worth checking out. https://betterlivingthroughbeowulf.com/march-madness-is-divinest-sense-sort-of/ …pic.twitter.com/MZgvz3PyFP

Who is your we? Therein lies the supremacy. You can judge value for yourself not others. When we have a minority of people judging subjective value for others, that’s called supremacy

“We” are individuals with expertise. For instance, I cannot judge Italian opera because I don’t have the knowledge or experience. Or CNN isn’t going to book me to discuss a Supreme Court decision.

There is no “expertise” in ranking in r determining value for others. The expertise is in discovery. Knowing more about the content in niche literary markets. The skill is not in ranking the value, but instead understanding the dimensions of it.

I love sharing w/ my students
@FilmCritHULK's Intro #4 of the linked essay. I do this early in the year to discuss the difference btw taste and judgment and to dispel the myth that art can't be judged or critiqued, that art isn't just a matter of opinion. https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2013/07/03/film-crit-hulk-man-of-steel …pic.twitter.com/KNnJrkEx2Z

Again this is supremacy. The idea that your opinion on something that is wholly subjective is more right based on values that are also wholly subjective can only be argued by accepting the idea that a small minority of people are supreme to others

Don't know how I got roped into this, but the problem with writing things online from 10 years ago is my mind has absolutely changed and I wholly agree with Jarron - the irony is more what I was reacting in that community 10 yrs ago was how a lot of toxic white dudes argued...

fervently and used subjectivity as license to justify a lot of gross shit. But ive realized since then that the convo has nothing to do w/ "qUaLiTy oF oPinIon" but good old fashioned morality. But I'd also like to tag out of this, thanks and be well.
