It is its own game, but the only way to learn that is by playing and failing.
I’m shithouse at all close-combat games, but Tsushima just clicked for me in such a satisfying way.
It's kinda like Arkham/AC in that the parries are very powerful. You can't mash square, but the easiest imo is alternating between parrying, stance changing into triangle guard breaks, and for crowds use the smoke/exploding ranged items and hack/assassinate away
I feel like it just wants you to be deliberate. There is a flow but it's less about flowing between combo dials or learned patterns and more about making decisions about your next three or four sword swings based on what's coming around you, and reassessing after each strike.
