That's why I'm so disappointed in how reductive your analysis of BvS is. Boiling it all down to a "Superman movie for people who hate Superman. Or in the very least, those who want to see him put in his place by humanity" reads like typical gatekeeping.

Genuine question — gatekeeping what? Not trying to be a dick, just not sure what you're referencing here.

That is indeed an odd word choice there... made even odder by “typical”... gatekeeping is a very specific thing...

Happy to clarify, sorry it wasn't clear. I'm speaking specifically about "Superman movie for people who hate Superman."

All a statement like that does is turn anyone who likes the film into an "other." It is essentially saying that BvS Superman fans are not "real" Superman fans.

To tell someone they hate a character for liking a movie, is such a strange way to have an analytical conversation, and I frankly stopped reading the article at that point.

As for "typical," when you've read the discourse for the film over the past 5 years (8 if you want to include MoS), this analysis and the tactic is absolutely nothing new. I understand that you all may not be as experienced in the DCEU discourse, however.

And, Hulk, I appreciate you offering the scene-by-scene breakdown and your general availability to discuss topics with your followers, but I don't think it'll do much to help me see your POV better -- we just read the film differently.

And let me reiterate, it's fine we don't see it the same way -- I'm certainly used to it, but I'm just disappointed with the sameness of the discussion and the divisive way it was approached.

Thank you for the clarification! But I'll still say this is the sort of thing that leaves us stuck- Because as much as I'm tapping into 5 years of reactions, I think there's a valid reason for that sameness / commonality of this opinion and why so many of us react like this...

And it's because we all see the same really, really, really ugly messaging in this film. It's just so dang present. Like, its hard to unsee it? Or certainly very hard to ignore. If our way of talking about feels strident, I really am sorry, but...

I promise it's mostly a reaction to how much of the movie itself feels strident, ugly, and offensive. To us, the movie itself is really drawing the "divisive" line first, ya know? Again, I really don't know how to unsee it. But...

I realize the way the wording of "for people who hate superman" can indeed separate us- and i promise it's not meant to be exclusionary like that. It's more just that I really think THE MOVIE hates superman, ergo, the belief the fans of the movie would too. But!
