The new Spotify UI is an all-timer piece of shit. Jaw is on the fucking floor.

Potentially dumb q, but are any good online communities to talk about this stuff? Whenever I talk about this shit on twitter I feel like most people don't understand the (deserving) rage so it feels like a bad space for it.

BTW - for everyone who doesn't understand why this stuff is a big deal. Basically all apps use various measurements of usage / retention / time spent, etc. The people who run these apps want those numbers to go up. The obvious problem? This is a simplification but...

UI depts basically figured out that if you make the app / program more labyrinthian / require more button pushing, then- you effectively make the user INSTANTLY spend more time in the app, but it's artificial time. Pure navigation cost and not actual enjoyment. Bad, right?

Not to their bosses! Who just have to make it look like the usage numbers are going up. Seriously one extra button. A little more scrolling. If you're dealing with thousands and thousands of users then it adds up to a MAJOR bump in usage for them.

It's pure stat juking and there's been an arms race in it when it comes to UX design lately and it's not only slowly killing the audience that wants to use these apps, it's becoming the de facto way to approach design. It's literally designed to waste your fucking time.

Again, this is a simplification of something with a lot more moving parts, but it all starts with understanding what we actually fucking measuring. Ask anyone in sports metrics, you measure something in a shitty way, you're going to get a shitty means to that shitty end.

Also, there are so many brilliant UI designers out there who do INCREDIBLE work. You'll notice the most seamless things are ones that depend on you repeatedly spending money (think food order apps) - and if you don't think they're ripshit about the new philosophy then, well, yeah

Film Crit Hulk added,
Dan Silov @DanSilovReplying to @FilmCritHULKAs a UX and product designer for 8 years I can tell you that we have lost this war already. Dark UX patterns rule the world now because, well, money. It’s the same as in film or gaming, big budget things rely on tropes/cliches, and only indies can do something to push the limits.1 reply 1 retweet 49 likesShow this threadThanks.
