The obvious thing is that while "knowing the answer" in a google maps world is completely freakin' useless, the thing that was actually gained in this is just understand context for US and world events....

When something happens, you know where it is, you know what's nearby / the area of effect. Moreover, it gives you more context for a region's history. Yeah, it's worthless on it's own. But turned out to be invaluable in terms of its integration into so many other disciplines?

The "gifted" class I was in for 6th-8th grades had us learn countries, capitals, mountain ranges, deserts, bodies of water for the whole world. The univ I went to had a Map of the Modern World class a bunch of people had to take too. Handy for trivia, at least.
