Amazing essay and something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. The thing that made me start thinking it was Great British Bake-Off and the fact that basically everyone likes the occasional episodes where no-one gets kicked out. Andrew

Wondering if you have watched Detectorists. It fits right in here.

As an autistic trans filmmaker, I know from experience that this balance is really, REALLY hard to do. My first feature was all about running as far away from trauma-porn as possible, but often that was based on me hiding from my fears too and being dishonest.

Hmm, I wonder where a film like My Neighbor Totoro falls in this. I feel like I’ve heard people talk about Japan specifically taking a “different approach to conflict” in their movies. But I’m struggling to put it together myself.

The conflict in that movie is so present, inherent, and heavy (very sick mom) but so much of the safety of that movie is knowing "it's okay, you will still find safety in the world and on your own."

I feel like, to some extent, this is why I find The Secret Life of Walter Mitty such a joy. It's a movie that makes me happy.
