Sometimes it’s actively harmful. In Carlito’s Way, when he’s trying to get away in the train station at the end, I was watching it that whole time thinking, “oh this is where he gets shot.” There’s a recent Neeson movie that does the same thing.

It's so counterproductive, but storytellers do it out of fear and lack of understanding - they think "if i show X and then show how we got to X then i told a story!" no, you created the illusion of a story by creating self-contained prophecy you had total control of.

One of my favourite of the 10% is the Denzel Washington film “Fallen”. You think you know the ending from the start but there’s a good twist. Also good use of unreliable narrator.

I love that movie. Satisfyingly tense and nasty. Great cast too.

Lolita would be a perfect movie for me if it wasn't for the beginning. It just spoils it. Kubrick said he added that because the middle lagged and I don't get how removing the mystery from the story is supposed to help that.

Especially when the thing that got me engaged in the movie, and probably most people, is the scene where you see the lengths he's going to to stay close to Lolita and it truly becomes a black comedy,
