The CG quality to pull off the video gamey feel? Although that probably has something to do with how familiar the producers/directors/etc were...I'm spitballing.

I mean back in the day of release we were still in the practical effects heyday, completely with amazing gore. It was more that they went cheap pg-13 because no one above 13 was interested. Now adults are.
