The other massive part of this is that gatekeepers / developers are people who grew up with these properties and are now old enough to hold those positions. The difference is everything and if you look at the history of Hollywood, this "20 years later" dynamic happens constantly.

What would be some other examples of the “20 years later” phenomena? I’m assuming comic book adaptations would be one but what others? It sounds like it’d be a fun history of Hollywood subject to dive into

The big example is spielberg / lucas wanting to capture the aventure serials of their youth. Hence indiana jones. And lucas literally tried to get the rights to flash gordon, when he didn't, he invented star wars (proof getting the rights isn't always a good thing)
