legitimately impressed by Zendaya distributing her points amongst crew on MALCOLM & MARIE, this should be a model big stars lending their talent to smaller films should follow https://twitter.com/jbrous41/status/1358254226837823489 …pic.twitter.com/z9gcWaDS7X

Wrote a big ass post on this a little bit ago, but the problem is that crew unions always got points on theatrical release / continued show sales, etc. Since we hit the streaming era, all the union-busting tech companies stopped that practice (since they own it all forever).

So while it's a great model of behavior, it's also just the defaulting to charitable thinking instead of upholding a responsible model that was already completely in place and stuff.

M&M was independently produced and financed. It was ostensibly non-union (unsure) at around $2.5M. Netflix purchased it in a $30M deal to distribute. They would have had no say in how the points structure on the film operated. Zendaya could have pocketed everything and she didn’t

It was absolutely union tho and it had to through the approval and safety protocols of each one to deal with Covid-19 (along with new rules). Again, what she did is to be lauded, I'm just noting the larger problem with the streamer side of things re: points and the industry

FWIW source, but it was actually pretty instrumental in the guiding how union folk could work in pandemic (and not get sued, which is a larger problem)https://deadline.com/2020/07/zendaya-john-david-washington-secret-movie-malcom-and-marie-during-coronavirus-shutdown-1202980360/ …

yes, they followed SAG/DGA protocol, but i saw no mention of IATSE at the end of the film which set off my alarm bells. regardless—theatrical or no, giving points to all below-the-line crew on indies is RARE, and we can use an example like this to push for needed systemic shifts
