I agree with a lot of this, but...is WandaVision *trying* to be funny with its sitcom pastiche? I agree with you that mostly it's not particularly funny, but that...also doesn't seem to be what it's going for?

Wrote about it in the longer episode recaps but the simple truth is that I don't even think they know what they're going for and they're trying to do a lot of things all at once.

For a moment I thought you were going to cite Venture Bros as an example of a zany, surreal world that is absolutely 100% real & consequential to its inhabitants.

It is? Some of the revelations in the later seasons really undermine the emotional journeys of earlier episodes. Being vague here due to spoilers.

Damn, now you’ve got me thinking back to all the shows I grew up with (usually animated) that operated like 11/20 minute sketches while ALSO attempting to maintain interepisode continuity. I think it makes for a fascinating feeling when attempted.

It becomes more difficult over time to maintain that balance, doesn't it? So many sitcom characters start out as wacky but accumulate into sociopaths due to the weight of their "funny" actions over multiple seasons.
-
That can also cut both ways! A lot of characters on The Office got softer with time!

The more I think about it, the more I feel like my love of dark comedy (both in consumption and creation) have less to do with being “edgy” and more to do with the fact that it often implies this dramatic tension that earns the laugh. It’s taught me setup and payoff pretty well.

(Of course, sooooo much edgy garbage completely fails at this, but it still ended up being decent training wheels for me, especially since I had more than enough tonal whiplash in my own queer crip autistic life)

This makes sense why I found Mad Men and Breaking Bad to be two of the funniest shows of their time. Despite the dark subject matter, the humor was always rooted in the reality of the characters and their situations.
