It's a straight line. I cannot explain the levels of unspeakable rage I have for everyone who didn't take what was happening seriously and how it fueled so much of what is happening now.https://twitter.com/bazooie/status/1348933230469107714 …

I looked at more that both are just symptoms of the evolution of modern western online culture as we fumble to understand how to graft our societal cues and behaviours onto an ingroup of tens of thousands.

The idea that Gamergate "started" anything is kind of baffling to me. It's like running a car for 10 years in the desert without ever adding oil or doing maintenance and then saying the first blown gasket was what started it breaking down.

The blown gasket was the first symptom of the myriad of fuck-ups and enviromental pressures that was wrecking your car. Similarly, I think Gamergate was just a confluence of issues boiling into a perfect storm at exactly the same time That we've seen it all again isn't down to GG

ok grumpy, this does nothing. The point of talking about gamergate is that it represents the spark of the moment that milo, emboldened by bannon's financial support, unified the toxicity of gamers to go from trolls to join the far right

so let's spare the "oh it's part of a 1000 year history" or whatever the hell and recognize the inherent turning point of that moment, which i wrote about length as it was happening. I have no time for letting it all shrug right now.

It's not about letting it all shrug. I'm saying that this reframing of the idea of Gamergate as this root cause of everything is nonsense. It's like saying that Patient Zero was the cause of Typhoid or whatever, the cart before the horse.

So referring back to Gamergate as this spectre of "where it all went wrong" (which I know you aren't expressely saying, but a lot of the current discourse IS) doesn't really help anything but continue the idea that there's one place to point and shout "THERE THAT STARTED IT!"

For the love for fucking christ, no one said that's where it all went wrong or where it started. We're saying it was the canary in the coal mine. What the fuck are you even trying to argue. Stop it.

Perhaps you don't realise how your initial comment reads. If I misconstrued it, that's maybe all on me. As I said, there's a lot of talk to the effect, and you sounded like you were jumping in on that facile POV and I expected better. Mea Culpa.
