I looked at more that both are just symptoms of the evolution of modern western online culture as we fumble to understand how to graft our societal cues and behaviours onto an ingroup of tens of thousands.

The idea that Gamergate "started" anything is kind of baffling to me. It's like running a car for 10 years in the desert without ever adding oil or doing maintenance and then saying the first blown gasket was what started it breaking down.

Here's a question what could have done about gamergate? Most Outlets that paid attention to it religiously denounced it, forums often scrubbed it where it could and pundits refused to "debate" any professed gamergaters and it didn't stop it what could have been done?

the social media platforms could have banned them. the media outlets could have reported on them and helped drive pressure to do that.
