he also has such clear topics of interest/ideas he keeps coming back to over and over again and I'm surprised he's not talked about in that way on the same level as someone like Brad Bird (but maybe its bc Bird has more films under his belt)

Part of it may be that Bird has also made live action films but he definitely seems to have done a lot more interviews and has more of a presence as an individual.

All of the BTS features on Soul have me convinced that his strategy to making films is to have an obsession on a theme and then hire all of the most amazing artists in the world to realise that. This isn’t me talking shit

I have mixed feelings about Soul but I know it's heart was in the right place, I also just feel in love with the visually textured detail and lighting of the New York setting and interior environments. The black barbershop was a hell of a thing.
