I just quickly lost a game of CIV 6 on "settler" difficulty because I wasn't taking defense seriously at all and now I'm having an existential crisis.
Never played! Always been in the CIV series for the most part. Know a few people who played em, but don't know much else, honestly.

Total War fucking rocks, and my favorite thing about it is the series has so many entries it's almost a genre unto itself now. I'm playing TW: Warhammer 2 at the moment, where I am an army of giant man-rats fighting with dinosaurs while plotting to betray my vampire pirate allies

But like, also you could play the same series with the same basic mechanics, but be fighting over the Shogunate of Japan. Or Medieval Europe. Or China. Or...

They are at once very similar but also completely different, because you can opt in/out of some of the play styles that they both offer and still have tons of fun depending on what you opt in/out of. If you like to turn the entire map your faction's color...

...there's a lot of overlap. Total War is more managing settlements, armies, economies and diplomacy than advancing through technological ages or exploration though. But there's still an aspect of that when it comes to accessing top tier units. Can't tweet the nuances ;)
