I just quickly lost a game of CIV 6 on "settler" difficulty because I wasn't taking defense seriously at all and now I'm having an existential crisis.

Really? I don't feel it. BUT if you hate that war stuff try Canada. You can never be the target for surprise war
-
Also are you playing vanilla 6? Cuz yeah that game is rough

You have just described my exact problem with the latest civ games. I feel like I barely get to play with a unit before I'm upgrading. The eras feel all too short.

How do you feel about the Total War series? I don't know that it's what will scratch the itch you're looking for but it's worth exploring if you haven't.

Never played! Always been in the CIV series for the most part. Know a few people who played em, but don't know much else, honestly.

Not sure I recognize this issue. Civ VI is personally my favorite, each game and civ feel so different from each other and there's more interesting decisions. I felt like Civ V was kind of solved for me at the end.

Sounds more like CivRev, the console version, designed for games that last around four hours, tops.
-
It's got that vibe and i'm just like HOW did you screw up this mechanic for people who have enjoyed playing like this for five previous games.

My CIV 6 problem is that all of the leaders are, essentially, Trump. Boastful, casually insulting, opportunistic and irrationally aggressive. And when you start beating them they complain endlessly and make nonsensical peace offerings every two turns.

I've considered going back to 5 but I really love the aesthetic of 6, and I don't know if losing that is a tradeoff I can take
