The thing about writing about video games is just the insane time commitment. Like when I wrote this piece on the entire Assassin's Creed series, it's like "there is 500 hours worth or research" in this, let alone the actual writing.https://www.patreon.com/posts/assassins-flack-43801408 …

Sometimes I look at an upcoming 60+ hour game and just shudder a bit.pic.twitter.com/qVXggJEqJS

Just getting started on your piece but I chuckled at your line asking why you've played all these games and then your answer. I'm basically in the same boat at this point. There was a time when I was actually quite interested in the story and characters. That ended after Ezio.

Although, I REALLY enjoyed Black Flag, both in story and gameplay. Had a lot of fun with Origins, too. I wanted to really like Odyssey, and while it's GORGEOUS, it's story--past and present--just sucked. I miss having a narrative that I cared about.

And then there's the eternal discussion of game lengths and stuff like 2 hour games and 150 hour games. The duration of games is such a messy affair, imagine if movues were anywhere between 30 minutes and 7 hours or more...

I think the thing for me about 4's story is it felt like a perfect companion piece for 3's story. 3 always felt like a tragedy to me, where connor is manipulated into the assassin's by juno and ultimately loses everything he held dear to the assassin's black and white morality

In contrast, I think the basic thesis of black flag lies in the governor's dying words to edward, "You wear your convictions well. They suit you." Unlike connor, his grandfather ran from the life for treasure and fame, and in the creed found real truth and purpose. It saved him.

I own some of these games, and have only played like, 20 minutes of the first one, but I thought you did a great job writing them up. Part of me wants you to do a write up on the one video game I worked on, haha.
