Assassins Creed Valhalla is out and it's led me to do a MASSIVE look back at the entire series. It's success, it's faults, & the larger questions that loom over video game function. Behold: ASSASSIN'S FLACK, DESIGN CHOICES THAT STACK, AND NOT LOOKING BACKhttps://www.patreon.com/posts/43801408

Damn you, Hulk! I was going to do that, but over a series of videos. (Looking forward to reading it.)

I haven't played all the AC games, but what ones I have played, I've entirely given up caring about the meta-story, AND the non-meta-story, to focus 100% on the travel & exploration. And, in the case of Black Flag, which I loved - the piracy. Sailing and shanties!pic.twitter.com/8bM4CvYeOZ

Where Black Flag left you wanting more accurate naval battles, it left me wanting more freewheelin' sailin' 'n shanties, and I was eager for Sea of Thieves until I discovered that it was online multiplayer, which has negative appeal to me.

"I mean, sometimes the ideas of ludo-narrative dissonance, particularly with violence..." Is this missing a verb?

Storytelling in gaming will never surpass when you had to fistfight the Pope.

I love storytelling in games but for the most part, I can't watch cut scenes anymore. The last time I watched them without skipping the frames or skipping altogether was The Last of Us. Even Witcher 3. For some reason I think "I want to play a game not watch a movie"

But this creates it's own existential crisis (like in your review) Is it just that I'm not letting myself enjoy a mode of storytelling? Is the problem with cut scenes (which feel lazy when environmental or mechanics-as-metaphor storytelling is often so much more immersive) or me?
