Does anyone else have to fight an ever-lasting battle with their TV audio? Volume ranges between different apps, inputs, commercials - auto leveling can work surprisingly well sometimes except for the way certain channels and programs have it fluctuate WILDLY. Its insanity.

Same here! Sick of having to just keep it low and keep subs on all the time.

Not an expert but: Apple TV has a “reduce loud sounds” option to homogenize loudness, and i found rebalancing the surround system to make the center channel (where dialog lives) to be louder than the surround (explosion sounds) helps too

Depends on your set up. I have mine thru a stereo hi-fi set up and I’ve found that avoiding any home cinema options and going for the 2.0 stereo makes a big difference. Not always an option in apps though. Built in tv speakers are notoriously crappy too which won’t help

While I have 5.1 speakers, I use headphones for almost everything, and it tends to alleviate this issue. For the most part.

Hey Hulk! TV shows are mixed in a way where they can't exceed a legal audio level but commercials don't seem to be held to the same loudness standards. Film can run the gamut and "home theater" version can potentially be compressed but many films don't get that treatment.
-
Basically audio compression/limiting reduces the dynamics of the audio track so that the listener doesn't have to mess with the volume but at the expense of the mix -- think of the difference between classical and pop music in terms of punchiness.

Hi Hulk, just a minor one, with Netflix if you don't have 5.1 surround sound you can choose a 2.0 audio channel in the audio selection (where you choose subtitles) that can help normalise sound to make things more balanced. Forcing 5.1 sound through 2 speakers can cause imbalance

Omg I thought this was simply b/c I am elderly ie. “hey you kids - get off my lawn!” Actively managing the volume levels between dialogue and action/SFX is a supremely stressful endeavor. DVD movies used to be the worst but steaming movies have defo picked up the baton.

The only solution is buying better speakers unfortunately (unless you've already bought them, then your setup might need tweaking). Most TVs are designed to give you the best visual experience possible and "I guess we'll build in a free speaker as well".
-
Changing the settings is trying to mitigate bad technology, like wacking up the saturation & contrast on a TV with bad picture. You might get something more watchable but you're messing with the director's intent. Listening with auto-leveling is an audio engineer's nightmare.
