You activated my PTSD from the middle years of digital cinematography in this piece. Part of the reason I liked Nolan’s movies so much was because of the inky black levels he and Wally Pfister get. But yeah, Reeves’ Ape movies were gorgeous and this looks that way too!

you mention in passing that people misuse "tone" and now I'm anxious that I've been misusing it. could you define tone in film?

It’s hard to nail down, which I think is his point. I use it a lot about Marvel movies which, to me hit the perfect tone for the material being neither too dumb (Batman and Robin) nor too serious (The Dark Knight). It’s usually a fine line. Again, may be using it wrong

Love your note about this. It feels like if Batman and SE7EN shared a universe. Learning that Greig Fraser is in the cinematographer chair was hella fun. Loved his stuff for Mandalorian and Rogue One. This should totally be a film that’s taught in lighting classes.

Agree that it looked nice. Obviously can't judge anything right now but the part with him beating the shit out of a guy is...a bit concerning.

1. Fantastic piece. I just had an observation that I’m going to be breaking down in probably the following two tweets, because character limit. Should it come out of nowhere, and if I’m wrong, then I apologize.

You expressed mild disdain for “hosts of people” misusing LogC—in the name of a lack of effort—which, if I assume correctly from experience, is one of the many log color profiles aimed at squeezing in a wider dynamic range and intended for color correction?
