Have you tried powering off, removing the SIM (small tray on the side, accessed by pushing in with a small pin/paper clip), and putting it back in/powering on?

You may also need a new SIM card. Local carrier stores usually can provide and update for free.

Literally just went through this with my wife’s phone. You most likely need to replace your SIM card
-
Your carrier will likely replace it for free or like $5

As everyone is pointing out, likely a dated SIM card

Happened to my 5s recently, bit the bullet and upgraded after it got more and more unreliable. Was easier than fixing it in my case.

Try resetting all network settings. You'll lose your WiFi passwords and a few other things, but it also resets your cellular config. Reset your Network Settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201415

I have had to take the sim out and put it back in a few times with my 6S. Usually after it came a little loose from being dropped.

Why have you not upgraded? I ask as a former iPhone 6 user that held out until last fall. Most of my reservations were, thankfully, unfounded.

He did write that he has been keeping the phone up to date.
