Moffat was so great in individual episodes, but as a showrunner he didn't have the chops

I'd argue he had the chops, he just didn't have the interest.

It’s a shame because I loved Coupling and all his Davies-era episodes. I was excited when he became show runner. But his seasons seemed so chaotic. They drew big ratings though, so there was no urgency to replace him.

I felt that a lot nearing the end of Matt Smith. Actually thought Capaldi’s arc with Clara was the strongest of the series after the disaster of S7, with a higher batting average of eps like Girl Who Died, Mummy on Orient Express etc.

I think you can definitely feel Moffat’s exhaustion after the chaos of S6, to the point you feel like he would’ve left after 7, but Capaldi provides such a strong second wind of inspiration that carried him through the next couple years.

He repeatedly built up a single big mystery arc and then completely blew the reveal of the answer.

I hated having to sit through talls of "The Hybrid" and whatever else happened with Capaldi. I want fun space-time adventure, not bungled mystery plots!

Unless "LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS AUTHOR SURROGATE DUDE IS" counts.

You can see this at the end of each Sherlock season. Made a cliffhanger and then didn't care enough to actually answer it

I absolutely loved Capaldi's final season on the whole. That, and Matt Smith's first, are my two favourite periods of modern Doctor Who by a considerable margin.
