Is like you're talking about a different movie. I recall Dixon's racism more supporting his portrayal as an asshole. The fact he does something positive, or Mildred makes peace with him, isn't meant to make us feel better about racism. Anymore than him throwing Red out a window.

Seeing nothing wrong with that portrayal is the exact problem with the insidiousness of that kind of portrayal. He's a racist piece of shit. He does horrible things. He's is punished for none of them. But instead of that being a point. He changes cause he "wants to be a detective
