Yup. Conflict obviously creates great nail-biting tension! It's great! But one of my favorite movies of all time is Magic Mike XXL, which creates so many situations where something could go wrong, but instead they find the non-toxic, inclusive way to disarm it. It's brilliant.https://twitter.com/gregpak/status/1265108009782579200 …

I remember once arguing in film school that stories DON’T have to be based on conflict and NO ONE agreed. I was thinking about my experiences in improv comedy, wherein sometimes the glory of the story is seeing connections being made step by step. Building instead of conflict. https://twitter.com/ZacBeThompson/status/1263224698420117504 …

This may be semantics and/or tautological, but isn't any obstacle to a character's goals inherently conflict? Even if it's not Person vs. Person, isn't Person vs. Nature, Person vs. System, Person vs. Obstacle all a form of conflict?

Ideologically? Yes. The real difference in application is how much a film uses that conflict to maximize drama. A film like Magic Mike XXL disarms it all so quickly and keeps the film evolving and light on its feet, if that makes sense.

Also the promised Neverland (recent chapters anyway). It is so committed to it that Reddit is officially losing its shit

I just watched some nostalgic Michael (Bad Boys and the Rock) and one of the ways I think he's really limited as a storyteller is that his idea of drama is people yelling at each other and almost 100% not listening. The plot of BB would not exist at all if anyone listened.

I love that example. I wonder if The "conflict" pro-group might consider even the "could go wrong" as a qualifier? So that the language "complication" is accidentally linked? That said, I much prefer thinking of the creative solutions as the better part of "problem solving"

Yeah, I always hate when people praise a movie for having “no plot” or “no conflict” when it’s actually challenging our notions of what story & conflict are & how they can be resolved.

Would something like Before Sunrise be an example of this as well? Where all the drama comes from the ideas presented and the joy of human connection? Or is there also some underlying conflict there.

It could be argued that the conflict in Before Sunrise is time itself, as cliche as it is now I think My Neighbor Totoro is the best example of no conflict
