It's been 30 years since Jim Henson died. It spurned a whole lot of meditation on the wonderful weirdness of the 80's. Please enjoy and thank you for your support. It means so much <3https://www.patreon.com/posts/37344449

An article about weirdness and CGI and no Cats (2019) references!?!

Reminds me of Mark Twain's essay "How to Tell a Story", which is over 50% racially horrifying language, but posits that discursive, seemingly nonsensical storytelling invites us into a rapport with the storyteller, creating deeper enjoyment. https://twain.lib.virginia.edu/onstage/how2tell.html …

Just finished reading it, 'twas fantastic! (and also made me really want to rewatch the 1990 Ninja Turtles) Also: have you seen the new Dark Crystal series? It is WILD, and really captures much of that 80s-era energy.

Lovely article. This documentary (if available in the US?) https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80224167 … is neat; I thought it would be tedious nostalgia poking but it's really about the twists & turns of product development, including a section on the movie.

Great piece Hulk. I’ve just The Muppet Movie with my toddler daughter. Absolutely amazing. Possibly the first children’s film but also for adults?

You ever check out Defunctland's 6 part doc series on Henson and his TV shows on YouTube? You will be amazed by the journey you take by the end. I was bawling! Highly recommend! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLplWWKocAfTYIGzH8eQ0x0kEQgoV9CpYm …

Great essay. Agree with you that rigidity about needing a 100% consistent tone has made a lot of modern movies feel generic and overly-polished. It's why international films like Parasite can feel so refreshing, because they don't adhere to Hollywood's usual tonal boundaries.
