The non-set Legos are pretty affordable and more closely match what I got as a kid. I never had a branded set, was lucky to get some instructions and enough pieces that kinda matched.

My kid went to a birthday party in February at a place called Bricks 'n Minifigs, which is a secondhand Lego store and oh man. Prying Mr. Pietra out of there was nearly impossible. The only reason we haven't been back is *gestures* all this.
