I'm finally playing Sekiro and... FROM SOFTWARE games are just... they make me so insanely happy. I don't know how to describe it, because it's a combination of different feelings...

On one level, it's sort of the same feeling I get when I got to an incredible restaurant. It's this sensation of "you're in amazing hands" and every bit of the experience has had thought and catering going into it. It all feels so supremely crafted to the millimeter.

It's like a lot of high-end japanese restaurants, there's no ostentatiousness, no lavish decor, there's this spartan quality and yet utter focus on the beauty of the things that really matter.

And at the same time, it's diving into an immense challenge that require such zen and focus and clarity of goal. But even when the game seems most cruel, it's always FAIR. Whenever I die I know exactly what I did wrong.

And along the way, there are no games better at TEACHING you how to play them through the organic nature of what they demand from you. You don't pass sections til you have them down, once you have them down, you're really are accomplished. I love these games so fucking much.

I’ve never played one myself; any suggestions for where to start? Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne...? (I currently do my gaming on a PC, but I’m hoping to buy a Switch once the scalpers stop hogging them. PS4 is lower on the priority list.)

Oh man... it's... souls 1 is weirdly the hardest, the humanity system is pretty cruel... is it insane if I think dark souls 3 is the best entry point? Maybe sekiro actually but let me play more. THEY ARE HITBOX GLORY

DS3 has a much higher execution demand than 1 though, and its storybeats relate to 1 as well. I'd recommend just starting with 1, or Bloodborne/Sekiro- those being stand alone. Depending on which mood/setting appeals the most too, mood is a big part of these games.

Is it telling I thought 3 was the easiest purely by virtue of the fact I had been trained by 2 prior souls games?

Haha, it's almost certainly true, maybe give 1 a quick go in between at some point for comparison. There is truth in that 1 is arguably the most opague in systems though, but that's not necessarily the same as raw difficulty.

Maybe I just can't stand the thought of doing sen's fortress again.

I found I really liked Sen's on replays, it's so wonderfully intricate and a real case of "once you know it it becomes much easier". It's Tomb of the Giants that makes me shiver.
