Oh, I’m not deriding cinematic games. THE LAST OF US is a masterpiece. But many AAA games think they need to stuff games with journal entries, inconsequential dialogue, etc. Some make it work, but most cram in so detail there’s little room for the player’s interpretation.

On the other hand, I've also been bitten by leaving things up to the player's interpretation, and they interpret the worst possible version of the blank space we left for them, then get angry at us about that.
