I think an important element of video game storytelling is what isn’t. I think they work best when they leave it to the player to fill in the blanks

It’s why I think less is more in video game narrative and why environmental storytelling works so well.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Suns has an incredible use of interactivity that is more metanarrative and thematic in a linear story.

I think you'd like The Beginner's Guide - it explores interactivity and death-of-the-author in some really emotional ways, and it's a short two-hour experience. It can be tough for people with depression, though.

On this note, I recently first-timed the Mass Effect games, and the most moving moment was just talking to an NPC who'd lost his friend at the Collector Base. He didn't get sad music or anything. He was just noticably more polite and had none of his cheeky attitude from before.

Will you ever write about that FFVII remake? It seems right up your alley (in terms of explaining why video games work/don't work, I'm not saying you'll love the game)
