Does it make any sense to construct a romance story like a mystery novel -- a "wholldoit", if you will, with the challenge being "identify the future spouse"?

Recent real example: Story begins w/flash-forward to the protagonist's wedding, then jumps back to Day 1. It's made clear that the spouse is one of a group of people protagonist meets on Day 1. Reader is implicitly challenged to figure out who before it's made explicit at climax.

I'll put it like this, I'm not sure what that gets from your audience beyond curiosity.

It can get you some initial appeal in a serialized narrative, I think, but then 80% of your fandom ends up disappointed no matter who "wins". :/

It's also just like, the inherent appeal of romantic comedies isn't in "who" get it's picked. It's knowing the two in question, and watching, emoting, fretting, and enjoying as it finally happens.

One could argue that's kind of the plot of HIMYM, although of course that show was most disappointing to fans who were focused on "who'll do it".

I was going to say this sounds like HIMYM. I didn’t mind the premise of the journey to find your person. I just hated everyone but the mother because they were bad people
