To be clear, I think the fact a lot of people not being surprised ties into my feelings of cynicism when it comes to exactly this kind of brand of obvious fake-out storytelling.

I think it’s a product of the “get the audience hyped at any cost” marketing mentality

Yup. Not a fan of whole scenes/openings being used either.

Netflix et al have enough data to know which seasons we've seen. So why push S2 trailers which have spoilers for S1! Makes ya not want to even start, takes all the tension out.

Problem is that they have to be on set at some point, and there will be leaked photos all over social media. Arguably better to get out in front of it and have some control over the reveal?

Honestly when it’s this obvious/predictable I prefer the straightforwardness to the “Cumberbatch isn’t Kahn” approach.

I guess it saves them the trouble of lying through the whole promotional season? That was pretty painful to watch for Justice League with Superman and that season of GOT when Jon Snow was "dead"

It's a bummer. We're 4 weeks into Star Trek Picard and a legacy character highlighted constantly in the marketing has had 15 seconds of screentime and one line of dialogue. Would have preferred they were a *surprise* to a whole month of wondering where the hell they are.
